Killing Us Softly 3: Advertising's Image of Women

Back

Jean Kilbourne's pioneering work helped develop and popularize the study of gender representation in advertising. Her award-winning Killing us Softly films have influenced millions of college and high school students across two generations and on an international scale. In this important new film, Kilbourne reviews if and how the image of women in advertising has changed over the last 20 years.

With wit and warmth, Kilbourne uses over 160 ads and TV commercials to critique advertising's image of women. By fostering creative and productive dialogue, she invites viewers to look at familiar images in a new way, that moves and empowers them to take action.

Four thumbs down because the comment is naive to the extreme. It is just like the stupid slogan by Nancy Reagan when it came to drugs, "Just say no!" The factors that influence behavior are numerous, and yes, people need to be responsible for their actions. But media should ALSO be responsible.

Wow. four thumbs down for a very logical comment. Female "self victimization" seems to be an incurable disease and just like the alcoholic it blames everything but itself.

It is almost 2009, is there going to be a Killing Us Softly 4?

Everyone is in the "thrall of advertising", because it surrounds us. We see thousands a day, and most of them are saying the same thing: for women, physical beauty is all that matters. Girls are bombarded by these messages from a very young age, making it difficult to even build the self confidence and self respect needed to create a healthy self image. Of course there are women who see beyond the lies of advertising, Jean Kilbourne is one of them.

You can feel yourself being affected? Do you have a mind of your own? Were you raised to stare at TV commercials like a sheep? What the hell is wrong with you people? DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE A MIND OF THEIR OWN??!!??

I have a mind of my own and SADLY I don't have to stare at a television like a sheep to see these ads! Just going outside I see ads all over. Going to work there are ads everywhere. And it isn't just advertising beauty, it's any advertisement pushing me to do something. Typically I ignore them but every now and then it gets a little overwhelming.

not to mention the fact that t.v and the beauty ideal effects you the most at a young age BEFORE you can consciously ignore them... rofl thanks though for giving us the most typical answer ''it doesnt effect me''.

pretorious, have you watched the vid, or the entire documentary for that matter? It would be helpful for you to get all the facts before starting bashing free thinkers... I watched all of it, researched the subject, and wrote a college term paper on it with 100%, have you? Just a thought before you start condescending others. Peace, Andrea
