Army Rejects Dragon Body Armor

Back

Once again the US Army proves that it can care less about the safety of our men and women in uniform. Dragon Body Armor has been tested by the FBI, CIA, many police forces and everyone in the world agrees that it is the best, except of course the US Army.

In a test for the History Channel's military show, "Mail Call", the vest repelled nine rounds of pointed steel ammunition from an AK-47 and 35 rounds of 9 mm, all fired into a 10-by-12-inch configuration on the vest. In "Test Lab", also on the History Channel, the vest withstood a total of 120 rounds, fired from both an AK-47 (7.62 × 39 mm) and MP5 (9 x 19 mm). In another demonstration on the Discovery Channel series "Future Weapons", a Dragon Skin vest withstood numerous rounds from an AK-47, an MP5, and an M4 carbine (5.56 x 45 mm), and a point-blank detonation of an M67 grenade. While the vest was heavily damaged (mainly by the grenade), there was no penetration of the actual armor.

On December 7, 2006 a demonstrational shoot for the following departments took place on a 10" x 12" SOV-2000 Level III panel: Saint Charles Parish Sheriff's SWAT, Saint John's Parish Sheriff's SWAT, Gretna PD, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's SWAT, LaCruz Parish Sheriff's SWAT, Ascension Parish Sheriff's SWAT, Coast Guard Investigative Services, US Navy.

A total of 17 rounds was fired into the panel without penetration.

So why does the Army refuse military men and women to wear this? Even if they purchase it themselves?

the dragonskin armour is actually heavier ans does not have a quick release strap,in a burning humvee or in the water dragonskin will kill you , the current body armor is pretty good but wont stop a grenade which is unlikely to be thrown anyways

Do not invest or purchase anything tied to the BUSH name. For the last 75 years that name has been tied to EVERY disaster, calamity, and war in America and they have profited greatly.

ok,... except for the forward release, and adaptable rail systems, collapsible stock they really are. Performance wise they are the same gun. Its time for a change. I am not saying they arent good rifles. There are just better ones to be made.

they arnt the same guns they were 40 years ago they change them

The Kevlar would not be a problem with regards to temperatures below, say, 150°C, the ceramics, well, hey - it's ceramics, it takes ten times that over time.
Which leaves the resin.
Which can be exchanged for a better one in a matter of hours or days.
So, I fail to see why Dragonskin should be a failure.
Only one thing: they should make the disks with slanted sides so as to better deflect sideways incoming projectiles.

Just my 2 cents.

Dragonskin weighs more than IBA.

It doesn't hold up to high temperatures or exposure to diesel fuel.

It's being pushed by a corporation that wants millions of dollars in government contracts and is pissed off that it failed the military tests, and a liberal media organization that thinks jihadi "insurgents" are swell people just like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Stop drinking the Koolaid.

IBA has saved hundreds of lives.

Dragonskin is a scam being pushed by douchebags.

Try not to be publicly stupid, 'kay?

hwahwa5 is correct: Dragonskin failed the environmental tests when exposed to hot conditions (no hotter than inside a vehicle in Iraq) and when exposed to diesel fuel (like used in every fighting vehicle in Iraq).

Dragonskin is shit. The only reason anyone has ever heard of it is because the corporation that makes it is pissed they couldn't get contracts, and NBC thought they could get ratings with a "military corruption" fantasy.

That's just fucking stupid.

The scales are going to overlap BETTER on a "flat board" than on a curved human torso.

Did you drop out of school before they got around to teaching geometry?

Amadan.

People will believe anything on news these days...

Dragon Skin was not adopted by ANY US military branch because US DoD tested it and it did not provide the goods it says it does. Dragon Skin can be penetrated more easily than current armors when shot at an angle (which is where most shots come from, not frontally) and the "scales" came loose in high temperature environments. For the most part, if US DoD doesnt accept something, they usually have a good reason for it.
