The Battle of Little Round Top (1 of 4)

Back

Against orders, General Dan Sickles moved his Division forward into the Peach Orchard, the Wheat Field, and Devil's Den catching Longstreet off-guard, and partly responsible for the delay in Longstreet's offensive on the Union left flank, causing the delay in coordinations with Ewell which caused the Union to win the day.

General Hood and McLaws lead their divisions against Sickles, moving in an echelon formation against the Union forces, starting with Devil's Den.

With intense fighting at Devil's Den, Colonel Vincent's brigade is immediately rushed to the Little Round Top just in time to stop Law's brigade from seizing the hill.

War always has it's problems. The Great War (more commonly known as World War I) was started due to the assassination of the Archduke, but by the first year of it, it was no longer about revenge and all that, but by conquest, all these wars are fruitless, nobody ever wins in the end, they'll all just go home with a feeling of victory or resentment at the fact that they just sent thousands of men to die in the battlefields, war is nothing to be happy about.

cont...But that seems to be the norm in that the government always seems to need you when they start something and hail you as great people during the fighting, but when it is all over and the smoke clears, it always seems to be thanks, here is a couple of bucks, now get lost. Oh and BTW...We are going to raise your taxes to pay for all of this. Sorry if this offends anyone, but these are just the rantings of a retired Navy trumpet player who played TAPS one to many times I think...

I will be a Confederate till I die, but of all the men of the Union, Chamberlain is my favorite. I believe he was a good and God fearin' man and I had the honor of visiting his home in Maine and his story was sad to me in that, here was a man that won the CMH for his part in this battle, he was twice elected GOV of Maine, was the PRES of Bowden College, and spent many years working for the causes of Veterans, but he spent his last years as a Dock employee in Portland.

I have seen the movie, several times. They signed three year papers, thinking they were signing two year papers so they tried to desert. The Union army was a volunteer army in the Civil War, they didn't have to enlist.

Good point. The Union Army wasn't a totally volunteer army, in fact, just after the battle of Gettysburg there were draft riots in New York City. The army had a pretty robust conscription effort.

that don't matter. and most soldiers will be pissed especially because unless they are nuts, or are emos, or are those weird war hawks, they are going to regret they even spent a day up there. and fighting a war is pointless, especially when it is just money. because war never does bring freedom. only dictatorships.
