I never knew that Pete Seeger wrote this song. I always assumed that the Byrds had actually written it.

You might want to take a minute and reread that story (See Matt. 22:15-22). It was basically supporting why it was right for the Jews to pay taxes to Caesar, hardly an anarchist's stance, especially considering that the Romans weren't exactly welcome rulers in that region at the time. He wasn't directly endorsing that government, but he was advocating compliance with the powers that be, as long as that doesn't interfere with serving God. Paul echoes this in Romans 13.

I know the story but thanks. Jesus was urging Jews to prepare for the forthcoming Kingdom of God and as such they were to shed themselves of their worldy goods & hence would have nothing for Caesar to tax. Remember the story of the "rich young ruler" who Jesus tells to sell all that he has and to follow him. The young man cannot do so, and as such could not enter into the Kingdom. Jesus also encouraged his followers to abandon their families for his sake. Imo, about as anarchistic as it gets.

To me, anarchy means a desire to do away with governing structures. I beleive that the message was to respect and obey the earthly governing bodies, so far as doing so doesn't interfere with obedience to God's law.

God never speaks kindly of those who disregard His authority - after all, wasn't His forthcoming kingdom the ultimate of all governing bodies (without all of the corrupt politics, of course)? Jesus regarded himself as a servant to the King as well... Thanks for the discussion.

... And trace back a bit more, and you find God's word influencing many, many more.

Pete did a good job adding music and being wise enough to _not_ add too many of his own words to an already perfected poem.

It's a shame that modern-day music trends seem to have banished anyone willing to address life's deeper matters to the dark corners of the charts.

I love Crosbys face when Rodger plays, its like the first time hes heard the song.

Yeah, he also seems a bit subdued. It's hard to be humble and Crosby at the same time ... especially when you're talking about Seger's song that you used to perform when you were in a band that you were fired from - all while sitting next to Roger McGuinn who had recorded this at least twice before and later founded the band that you were fired from ... uncomfortable?

A time to be bitter, and a time to just agree with your former boss? Ahh, the 60s were a tumultuous time. :)
